How Seongdong Regional Self-Reliance Center Turned Urban Beekeeping into Skilled Jobs, Premium Raw Honey and Local Impact

This is not a honey company that added a social message to its packaging. BEEGIN AGAIN is an urban beekeeping enterprise operated by the Seongdong Regional Self-Reliance Center in Seoul. Its purpose is to help lower-income residents build economic independence through professional training, practical work and the production of marketable goods.

01 · A rooftop becomes a place of work

The honey is the result. The real product is a system that helps people begin again.

The Seongdong Regional Self-Reliance Center supports local residents who want to develop careers as urban beekeepers. Participants receive continuing instruction in modern beekeeping techniques and gain direct experience in colony care, hive inspection, seasonal management, harvesting and product preparation.

According to the project introduction, the team manages 177 hives on a rooftop in Geumho-dong, Seongdong-gu, where participants carefully raise bees and produce honey from flowers growing throughout the local area.

The programme does not end with basic training. The team also develops corporate gifts, runs educational programmes for children, assists organisations interested in establishing urban apiaries and supplies locally produced Seongdong honey.

02 · Social value supported by product quality

A good cause does not automatically create a good product.

BEEGIN AGAIN’s credibility comes from connecting its social mission to patient production, product testing and market-ready presentation.

01

Matured in the Hive

The project materials describe honey matured inside the hive for at least 45 days so bees can reduce moisture naturally.

02

Minimal Processing

The honey is described as produced without separate heat treatment and with limited filtration to preserve aroma, texture and floral character.

03

Production Standards

The materials state that pesticides and antibiotics are not used during production.

04

Testing Before Claims

Residual pesticide, antibiotic and heavy-metal examinations were used to address quality and urban-honey safety questions with evidence.

BEEGIN AGAIN honey quality and urban beekeeping information
BEEGIN AGAIN’s strongest answer to the question “Can urban honey be trusted?” is not a slogan. It is documented production and testing.
03 · Why the honey stick matters

Purpose attracts attention. Quality and convenience create repeat demand.

The honey stick is more than a convenient package. Turning locally harvested honey into a clean, portable, single-serving product gives the social enterprise a realistic commercial opportunity.

Consumers do not have to choose it only because they sympathise with the project. They can choose it because it is useful, well presented and easy to carry. The format requires no spoon, reduces sticky handling and works well for commuting, travel, outdoor activities, events and corporate gifts.

A meaningful origin brings attention.
Product quality builds trust.
Convenience creates repeat demand.
04 · Seoul’s local version of a global movement

Urban beekeeping becomes something different in every city.

The Seongdong initiative is part of a wider international development in which urban beekeeping supports education, local products, biodiversity and employment.

London · UK

Community & Education

Government bodies and associations have supported urban beekeeping through public education and professional guidance.

Tokyo · Japan

Local Collaboration

The Ginza Honey Bee Project expanded through partnerships with businesses, farms and local product makers.

Copenhagen · Denmark

Employment Creation

Bybi has connected hive construction, apiary management and honey distribution with work for vulnerable groups.

Seoul · Korea

Self-Reliance in Practice

BEEGIN AGAIN translates the same global idea into skills, local production and dignified work through Seongdong.

05 · What manufacturers can learn

Social responsibility can be designed into production—not added later for marketing.

BEEGIN AGAIN offers a valuable lesson for brands, manufacturers and institutions. A company can create products that respond to environmental challenges, develop professional skills and generate local employment while remaining competitive in quality, design and convenience.

01 / SKILL

Develop Professional Ability

Design production so participants gain transferable technical knowledge rather than only completing simple tasks.

02 / DIGNITY

Create Sustainable Work

Connect training to products and services capable of generating real revenue and long-term opportunity.

03 / ENVIRONMENT

Solve More Than One Problem

Use product development to address ecological needs and community needs within the same value chain.

04 / COMPETITION

Never Compromise Product Value

Purpose should strengthen a useful, tested and well-designed product—not replace those fundamentals.

The most valuable products do more than reach the customer. They leave people, communities and the environment stronger than before.
06 · A small stick carrying a much larger story

Environmental protection turned into professional skill. Self-reliance transformed into production.

BEEGIN AGAIN Honey Sticks reflect the work of the Seongdong Regional Self-Reliance Center, the people training to become professional beekeepers, the rooftop colonies being carefully managed and the local employment sustained through product sales.

They are proof that a product can be commercially attractive, genuinely high in quality and socially meaningful at the same time.
